Inspired by the teachings of Phyllis Young - one of the greatest leaders in string pedagogy in the 20th century, George Neikrug - a virtuoso performer and teacher, and Evan Tonsing - a highly innovative and creative teacher and composer, Dr. Benjamin Whitcomb’s expertise focuses on practicing and playing of string instruments, cello fingerings, string chords, and Popper Etudes.

As a Professor of Cello and Music Theory at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, he creates a nurturing and supportive environment in his cello studio, tailors his approach to the student, and guides students to reach their full potential as a cellist.

Testimonial

"It was in private cello lessons that I was able to best appreciate Dr. Whitcomb's skills as an educator. I cannot adequately describe the energy I that he poured into every one of my lessons. His techniques for introducing and reinforcing different skills were creative and highly effective. His passion for music and for teaching were infectious, and spurred my curiosity to learn more deeply. I remember lessons when we somehow got into conversations about advanced music theory and the physics of sound, as related to cello study. The way he explained and demonstrated concepts made me want to know more and more."
